When coming to Los Angeles there are quite a few places to check out when it comes to food. There are the obvious Roscoes Chicken & Waffles, Fatburger, In & Out Burger restaurants but then there are the small spots that are only well known in LA. Ladies and gentleman, I give you Diddy Riese Cookies. This place is usually packed with a line out the door much like Pink’s Hot Dogs on La Brea and Melrose, but it’s definitely worth the wait. They are famous for their ice cream sandwiches (see below), but these ice cream sandwiches are a bit different than your normal brown cardboard joints that stick to your fingers. For just 1.50 they let you pick two cookies and an ice cream of your choice to create possibly one of the illest ice cream sandwiches on the planet. There are a bunch of different cookies and ice creams so you can come up with many different combos. If you’re ever in Westwood and desire a small treat for cheap then hit this spot up! Plus there’s an arcade right around the corner…

I kept hearing about this place and how incredible the menu was, but to be honest…Doughboys Bakery has a lot of hype attached to it. From their Rice Krispy Treat Pancakes to their praised Monster sandwich (which was actually ok), it’s safe to say that they have quite an overwhelming menu. After being hyped about the Rice Krispy Treat pancakes and then being let down due to the fact it was nothing like what I imagined and difficult to eat, I was starting to lose faith in anything edible that may have come out of this place….until I was introduced to their Red Velvet cake (pictured below). It’s easily one of the best desserts I have ever eaten and although it’s expensive (about 6 bucks a piece) it’s definitely worth every bite…and surprisingly quite filling. Apparently this cake was featured on Oprah’s infamous Favorite Things list some years back and after I had a piece I completely understand why, cause it made Zack Lee’s Favorite Thangs List.

Ok, Cereal and I go together like Jenny and Forrest, although cereal would never shit on me consistently for years then write me after I’m rich and famous low key asking for child support. Anyway, I heard about this place a while ago but could never find the time to make it out to Westwood until recently, and let me just say that I almost cried. Juju’s Cereal Bar is easily one of the most creative ideas for a business that I have ever heard. They have this huge list of cereals, toppings and different kinds of milks that you can pick from to create your perfect bowl of cereal. And if you feel a bit overwhelmed or you’re just not that creative then they have their own pre-made bowls such as S’mores Galores (see: below) (Golden Grahams, Coco Krispies, Graham Cracker Crumbles, marshmellows and chocolate chips) or Waffle House Special (Eggo Waffle Cereal, bananas, chocolate chips, whipped cream and maple syrup). The hours are from 7 am - 5 pm Monday through Friday and 9 am - 5 pm on Saturday and Sunday, so if you get out late then you need to go on a day off. Trust me, don’t sleep.

Have you ever taken a bite of something that was so overwhelmingly flavorful it made you see stars, curl into a ball and doze off into the most delightful itis-nap? Take a bite of one of Nathan’s Famous Hot Dogs and you’ll experience just that. I’ve been a big hot dog fan my entire life but never tried these famous dogs until I was an adult. The first experience put me in a coma, and I’ve been hooked ever since… Eating contests are held with these and I don’t know how people last past four hot dogs, it’s simply amazing! So being that it is officially SUMMER and BBQ’s are all the rage, make sure to make Nathan’s Famous your choice. Trust me, you won’t regret it!

If you live in Los Angeles and haven’t been to Woody’s BBQ then you are missing out on some pretty good BBQ. Although, I do understand why some of you wouldn’t come out to Woody’s due to the misconception that Black American neighborhoods are plagued with violence, but please don’t let the television educate you on cultures you only know a bit about. It’s located right on Slauson a few blocks west of Crenshaw Blvd and the menu ranges from BBQ chicken & ribs (beef/pork) with a bunch of different sides like macaroni and cheese, baked beans and potato salad. So if you didn’t get too spooked out by early 90’s gangsta rap and hood movies, then make your way out to South LA and get you a premium meal man!

P.S. - Get a brew too.

I won’t proclaim myself as the ultimate cook but I do think I’m better than average. Many of you probably are turning up your lips like, “yeaa right”. So, to disprove all the nonbelievers, I would like to make this edition of THE GRUB ZONE *said in godlike voice*, about yours truly. Wink.

Oftentimes I’m too busy to actually take time out to cook, but when I get the chance I like to do it up. I’d been wanted to make this one for a few days now and yesterday I finally got the chance. Drumroll Please!:

Rosemary Chicken
Jasmine Rice

Smash!

Yea, I know you wish you were there. Don’t worry, pay me and I’ll cater.

Today I decided to go check out this spot called Los Tacos for my lunch break. My boy had been raving about it for sometime and today seemed to be the perfect day. Me being the fatso that I am, I smashed on two burritos; one chicken, and one carne asada. My boy had enchiladas and watermelon juice. Supposedly, watermelon juice is the official juice of the summer! So if you’re in in the West Hollywood area, be sure to stop and and get some bomb ass Mexican food from Los Tacos.

I found this place while cruising through Culver City, CA looking for different places to eat. If there’s one thing you should know about me, it’s that I dig food. From Mediterranean to Thai, I’ll pretty much eat anything as long as it’s served the right way. Pampas Grill isn’t too far off course from the normal dishes one would eat on a daily basis so I would honestly recommend this place to anyone with fully functioning taste buds. The wonderful thing about this place is that you create your own dish. You grab a plate from the far end of the salad bar and work your way down the list, staring off with salads then passing through the small side dishes such as rice (garlic and vegetable), mashed potatoes, mixed vegetables, beef stew, then you move on to the garlic bread and carbs. At the very end of the bar there is a chef standing in front of a cutting board with about 8 different skewers of meat such as BBQ chicken, sirloin and lamb (pictured below).

Zack Lee’s Plate of Gloriousness (Lamb, Garlic & Vegetable Rice, Greek Salad, Tomatoes & Garlic Bread)

Here’s the interesting thing about it, you pay by the pound! So when you hit up the line, be very careful as to not load your plate with stuff that you might not enjoy because you will definitely end up spending an arm and a leg due to the fact that a pound of food costs about 6.99, not including your beverage. All in all I have to say this is easily one of my favorite places to eat and it’s worth every penny. So if you wanna eat something other than McDonald’s Value Menu on your lunch break and don’t mind paying a little extra then I highly recommend you Google this place, find the nearest location and pay Pampas Grill a visit.

On a lunch run one day it was suggested to me that Bi-Rite was a good place to grab a fresh made sandwich. After a four block stroll up 18th St. I came to this wonderful market. At first, I was thrown off by the name, or maybe it was the “font” the name was in. At a distance it looked like it might be a pharmacy. Being that I wasn’t told that this was an entire market place, imagine my surprise when I entered to see a “vast array” (lol) of foods. With a mom & pop layout, I suppose this is the “Mini-Neighborhood Market” age with stores like Trader Joes, Whole Foods, etc. being the new go-to places for fresh eats. You won’t catch me complaining about that though. Check out the ABOUT on Bi-Rite:

“The joys of the table belong equally to all ages, conditions, countries and times; they mix with all other pleasures, and remain the last to console us for their loss.” - Jean Antheleme Brillat-Savarin

Located in the city’s historic Mission District, Bi-Rite Market has become San Francisco’s premier neighborhood market. We have been family owned and operated since 1964, in a location that has been serving the neighborhood since 1940.

Bi-Rite Market is committed to providing great food and warm, friendly service to our customers. We actively foster a community of food, and support local farmers and purveyors for our grocery assortment, as well as for our prepared foods and catering offerings.

So if you’re ever in the Mission area and you need groceries, or some bomb ass food for lunch, hit em up!

Honestly, if you don’t like burritos, you’re not a human being. Was that a harsh thing to say? Probably, but true nevertheless. The Burrito is Mexico’s answer to the Fountain of Youth (Ok, maybe that’s a tad bit over the top). One of my favorite Mexican spots to visit WEEKLY is El Buen Sabor. Sorry folks, this is a legit Mexican spot, so I can’t link you to a website of theirs, lol. And I would show you a picture of one of their amazing burritos, but it didn’t last long enough for me to snap it.

It’s located on the corner of Valencia & 18th Street in the Mission District (SF). Mos Definitely hit it up!

Exactamente!
