Normally I must admit that I’m not the biggest fan of Tyler Perry’s movies, but considering his recent monumental accomplishment of opening up the first Black movie studio in Atlanta, I thought it was only right to show him some love. As many of you may know, Tyler Perry’s claim to fan was his highly popular Madea series. And in my opinion, is one of the last people still making possibly Black movies on a consistent basis.

Now to the review…

With an ensemble cast including Kathy Bates, Alfre Woodard, Sanaa Lathan, Robin Givens & Mr. Perry himself, The Family That Preys continues Perry’s winning streak @ the box office. The basic synopsis of the movie is about two family’s from different walks of life that share a life long friendship. On one side, you have the Cartwrights, a wealthy white Mother and son. And on the opposite end is the Pratts, a black family of a mother and two daughters. The movie begins without a back story and leaves the opening scene to quickly fill in the character’s relationships. Jillian Cartwright & Alice Pratt are good friends. William Cartwright is the plotting son of Jillian and “supposed” heir to the Cartwright business. Alice Pratt is the mother of two daughters, played by Sanaa Lathan & the lovely Taraji P. Henson. Both daughters are the antithesis of either and according to the mother, have never gotten along. Each daughter is also married and the movie’s opening scene takes place at Andrea’s (Sanaa) wedding.

One thing I find common in Tyler Perry’s movies are his one dimensional characters. They’re either antagonist or protagonist and any of his attempts at having multi-dimensional personalities don’t hit the nail. The problem this causes is the extremities to which each character’s personalities are pushed. For example, Sanaa’s husband Chris, played by Rockmond Dunbar, is the good natured husband that works low level construction and lives a humble, albeit naive, existence with his highly successful wife who happens to work for the same company. His wife Andrea treats him horribly and frequently puts him down, resents his “inability” to find success, criticizes his dreams and to top it off, cheats on the side with their boss, William Cartwright. Now, be it beyond me to say that there aren’t men out there who are just like Chris, that put up with such behavior, but I haven’t met many personally. There’s one scene in particular that I find absurd. Chris discovers that Andrea has a separate account with a LOT of money in it and decides to confront her. When confronted, Andrea lashes out at Chris and tells him he will never compare to William Cartwright, calls him weak, and says he will never have his own business. Its extreme cases like this that I find are common in Tyler Perry movies and makes a big “?” mark appear over my head.

All that aside, the movie overall has good intentions and delivers a message about appreciating life, the fruits of friendship and the folly of adultery. I would recommend seeing this movie in theaters if only to support Tyler Perry’s accomplishments. Other than that, the movie is definitely an enjoyable watch on your favorite streaming website.

Looks like Pixar isn’t rolling with Disney on this one, but it still looks pretty entertaining. Bolt (John Travolta) is the story of a German Shepard that has spent his whole life on the set of a hit action television show in Hollywood. But when he is accidentally shipped to New York he slowly finds out he doesn’t have any of the powers he had on the TV show. Yeah, I know….Buzz Lightyear….still….looks pretty entertaining.

Exactly.

Damn. I always knew this movie would be made, I just didn’t think it would be this soon. Directed by Oliver Stone.

Exactly.

The follow up to the highly entertaining “return” of James Bond, Quantum of Solace will be hitting theaters on November 14th. If you’re like me, I know you’re excited and it goes without question that Casino Royale was definitely in the same group as Batman Begins for comebacks. I don’t expect this movie to live up to the accomplishments of The Dark Knight, but I do expect the entertainment level to match as a follow-up. Also, this movie features easily one of the most beautiful women period…in my book, Ms. Olga Kurylenko as the leading lady. Simply smashing…please do enjoy the trailer!

In what could quite possibly be the best news I’ve heard in the past few months regarding movies, I stumble upon a tidbit on The Hobbit. As I mentioned previously, Guillermo Del Toro will be directing The Hobbit. And briefly, for those that don’t know, Guillermo Del Toro is the man behind Hellboy & Pan’s Labyrinth…and The Hobbit is the prequel to Lord of the Rings. So to get down to why I’m so excited about this project is because of how Del Toro intends on making it. I’m sure everybody remember’s the old classics like, The Labyrinth, Dark Crystal & The Neverending Story. Wellll, Del Toro plans on making The Hobbit like the old classics and not focusing so much on CGI like most movies do nowadays. I have this thing about how bad some of the CGI graphics are sometimes…but I won’t go into that, instead, peep an excerpt:

Like Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson, del Toro has a soft-spot for the traditions of model-making and real-world workshop effects - something that he intends to carry through to The Hobbit.

He explained, “You have to be very careful not to rely on a single tool – and this is another thing that I share a passion for with Peter Jackson. We both are huge fans of ‘old-world’ techniques like maquettes, models, miniatures, paintings – and in the case of The Hobbit, I do intend to continue this trend and bring much more animatronics into the mix.

“We need to keep that art form alive, because it brings a textural power to the movie that ultimately affects the content. The creatures somehow seem more tactile and more tangible than CG.”

It’s clear that The Hobbit will continue the artistry of the model-making seen previously in del Toro’s previous work – but he’s not one to neglect the power of computer animation either. “I think that some creatures are better served by being completely CG and others are better served by being completely animatronic – and others are only possible if you mix the two.”

We naturally enquired if he planned on continuing with a CG Gollum: “Absolutely. I think that it worked perfectly on the [Lord of the Rings] trilogy and if it ain’t broke, why fix it?”

In this “Disposable Age” we live in a society that fears the end of good music as we know it. In my personal opinion, anyone that believes music is dead doesn’t have their ears to the ground. Either that or have over the years relied so much on the industry to provide music for consumption that they aren’t aware of any other outlets. Whatever the case may be, good music is and will always be available if you open your eyes, and ears. I stopped listening to the radio years ago and in doing so I was forced to search out new music. My search opened up new genre’s and history that were previously closed to me because I was letting someone else control what I listened to. But, all of this blabbing is leading up to the point of this post. Before the Music Dies Documentary:

“Before the Music Dies” is a documentary Narrated by Forest Whitaker that lays out a comprehensive and cautionary story about the deteriorating state of the music business.
The film contains interviews with music heavyweights such as Erykah Badu, Eric Clapton, Dave Matthews, and Branford Marsalis. The web site has tons of information including videos, trailers, screening information and ways you can get involved.

Of course a film such as this is expected to have a great soundtrack , and it doesn’t fail to deliver. It contains a ton of great music including tracks that have been previously unreleased.

This movie is a MUST SEE for anyone who is a musician and anyone who cares about the decline of the quality of music.

I’ve always wondered why a sequel to The Goonies never came into fruition. And of course if there were to be a sequel I would’ve liked it to be shortly after the release of the first one. Now with the rumor mills turning about Warner Bros. putting together a sequel NOW, I’m not too sold on the idea. For one, watching the original cast, who’re all adults now, in a sequel wouldn’t be too exciting. The Goonies is for kids. Secondly, the idea of a sequel with an entirely new cast (say, the children of the original cast) isn’t as bad as the first idea. The thing wrong about the second idea is that because of our fondness of the original, I’m not too confident in Warner Bros.’ ability to make a film entertaining enough for us to forget the original Goonies. But enough of me blabbing, here’s an excerpt from Moviehole.com:

I’ve a big-time scoop for all you loyal “Caffeinated Clint” fans (the rest of you, probably over at Hollywood Elsewhere, won’t be able to hear it – so ‘nerrrrr’!) today.

A very, very, very good source – if I revealed his name, you’d know straight away this was a solid bit of news – informed me a few days ago that “the sequel Corey Feldman has been telling media will never happen”, one “Goonies 2”, is indeed… happening. (And I don’t blame the Felddog for assuming it’s never going to happen either - this one’s been rumoured longer than the talking fridge).

Now I don’t know when it’s going to happen, because it has been on the drawing boards for a good decade now (”Star Trek” and “Transformers” scribe Robert Orci told me today that he was involved in a draft in about 1998), but it does seem to be inching forward.

So what have I been told? well, Warner Bros are finally going to give it the respect it deserves – this will be a large-scale theatrical release.. a tentpole. It will not be a direct-to-video release.

(A source at Warner Bros has since confirmed this - saying they are developing it as a major movie, but won’t share anything other than that. Nothing we didn’t already know though)

We’ve been told that there are writers on the project - and they’re being paid rather nicely for their services too – so it’s doubtful the script will be used as merely a place mat to hold Alan Horn’s sandwich. But god I hope they don’t fuck this bitch up - “The Goonies” is one childhood memory I don’t want butt-assaulted.

Well folks, the first official look @ the upcoming Harry Potter movie has finally hit the web! I don’t know about ya’ll but I’m a major fan of HP and I can’t wait for this movie. Sorry about the quality, but you know how leaks are….I’m pretty sure a clean one will hit the web soon, if it hasn’t already. This is the only one I’ve been able to find though. This one looks to be darker than ever…

So the next big blockbuster of the year released Friday, Hellboy 2: The Golden Army directed by the wonderful Guillermo Del Toro. The continuity between the first Hellboy and this one is flawless. Visually the movie is nothing less than stunning, with my favorite character design being the “Angel of Death”. Everyone has reprised their roles in this movie with several new additions. Liz Sherman, played by Selma Blair, has officially joined the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense (BPRD) and has also learned to control her powers. Abe is still as intuitive as he was in the first movie. And the man himself is every bit as hellishly hilarious as before.

The movie begins with a brief back story on a pact made between magical/fantastical beings & human beings. Apparently, the magical beings (led by the Elvin Woodland King) & the humans were at war. In an attempt to gain the upper hand over the humans, the Woodland King accepted an offer from the Goblin leader to forge an indestructible army made of Gold. This Golden Army could only be controlled with a special crown by someone of royal lineage. The humans proved to be no match for the Woodland King’s army and as a result, a pact was made between the two. The pact was that humans could have the land while the non-humans ruled the forests. The Woodland King’s son, the Prince played by Luke Goss, despised humans and did not agree with the pact. Because of his hatred, he was forced into exile, vowing he would return to re-awaken The Golden Army.

Obviously us humans did not adhere to the pact, what with all cutting down of the forests and etc. And as you may guess, this does not sit well with the Prince. So after centuries of exile, the Price decides to return to the magical folk what he believes is rightfully theirs by re-awaking The Golden Army. And naturally, its up to Hellboy and the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense to put a stop to the Prince’s plans.

Overall, I enjoyed this movie better than its predecessor, and had no complaints other than a few small things that don’t take away from the movie at all. One small thing that threw me was the undeveloped romance between Abe & the Princess, it seemed pretty random. Also, the backlash towards Hellboy from the public also seemed abrupt and unwarranted. Another interesting thing about this movie is that a bad guy doesn’t truly exist. The Prince plays the position of the antagonist, yet his intentions aren’t absolutely evil. He sees how human beings have treated the earth and wants to put a stop to it. Yet, being that we’re humans, we can’t do anything wrong and therefore, the Prince must be the bad guy. So yeah, I definitely recommend paying $10 to see this movie…..
