For some strange reason this song has been trapped in my head for about a week now. I haven’t heard it in years and it randomly popped in my head while I was driving around the city looking for Sonics, which is a pointless mission.

Exactly.

It pains me to call this song “old school” because I remember when this was the “new Beastie Boys” record after a long hiatus. This video was directed by MCA a.k.a Nathaniel Hornblower himself and it’s easily one of my favorite videos of all time.

Exactly.

When this joint first dropped I remember not liking it that much simply because he sounded/rhymed just like B.I.G and he just so happened to be signed by Bad Boy. It seemed like Diddy was just trying to fill that void that B.I.G left when he passed. In any case, its 2009 now and I sort of feel the same way but Barrington Levy murdered this record. Shouts out to Shyne for his recent release from prison.

Exactly.

Released back in 1995 LL Cool J’s Hey Lover featuring Boyz II Men was definitely one of the biggest records for the entire summer of 96. Lotta dedications where sent out to this one…

Exactly.

For some odd reason, I woke up this morning & the first song that popped in my head was Killarmy’s “Wake Up.” Its funny because I hadn’t heard nor thought about the song for years. Its a testament to how much music I’ve consumed over the years when a song I used to listen to religiously falls by the wayside. Despite everything, listening to it now gives me the exact same feeling I had listening to it then. Wutang used to RUN SHIT! I remember thinking that Wu had to have a small-sized village of a crew that NOBODY wanted it with. I used to bob my head so intensely to the intro of this song, rapping “WAKE UP!” while gradually getting louder. I love that I was raised on Hip Hop.

1996 was a great year. My favorite girl trio of the time was SWV (Sistas With Voices). Many of their songs trace back to some fond memory I have of being young and experiencing/learning life. Use Your Heart is definitely one song that falls into that category of all time favorite R&B songs. I remember thinking that the lead singer of the group, Coco looked almost identical to my sister, and I still do! Sadly, R&B’s reign ended when the 90s did. Although, I do believe everything comes full circle, and the tides may soon turn towards a resurgence. Or at least, lets hope so! If the 80s came back, then why can’t the 90s? Anywho, here’s the video to SWV’s “Use Your Heart.”

Enjoy

Fun Fact: This song was produced and written by The Neptunes! If you listen closely, you can hear Pharrell’s vocal overdubs.

Classic, period. His delivery, the concept, the beat….very different for its time and still pretty abstract by todays standards.

Exactly

I had a request for an Old School Tuesday video and it got me to thinking about Ghost Town DJ’s “My Boo”. To this day, everytime they play this record in a club everyone goes crazy. Classic.

Exactly.

I figured we would go back to the mid 90’s and visit the 69 Boyz. Remember doing the Tootsie Roll? That’s about all people remember when it comes to this group but they did have another record called Kitty Kitty where they sampled the classic Gap Band record “You Dropped The Bomb”. Anyway, check out the video and reminisce.

Exactly.

Back in 1994 all of the prominent Black R&B musicians got together to sing a song called You Will Know that was featured on the Jason’s Lyric soundtrack. Written by D’Angelo the song featured everyone from Aaron Hall, Tevin Campbell, Tony Toni Tone, Usher, R Kelly, Brian McKnight and a bunch of other people. Even though the song the ladies did for the Panther soundtrack was iller, this song was still pretty cool.
